On Becoming a Guinea Fowl

Horizons 2024 / On Becoming a Guinea Fowl / Zambia, United Kingdom, Ireland 2024

On Becoming a Guinea Fowl

Synopsis

While traveling along a deserted road, Shula comes across a lifeless body. It’s her uncle Fred – but the young woman’s response to his death is almost suspiciously calm. Not so the rest of her family, however. The tensions resulting from the frenetic preparations for the wake and funeral open old wounds that nobody has dared to speak of for years. The second film by director Rungano Nyoni, whose debut I Am Not a Witch (2017) was a festival hit after its Cannes release, again returns to Zambia, where the magical mixes with the real and the traditional with the modern.
