Three films in the festival’s Horizons section reflect the unprecedented hit year enjoyed by Indian cinema. Two were shown at Sundance and in Berlin, while Sandhya Suri’s feminist thriller Santosh was shown in competition as part of the Cannes Film Festival’s Un Certain Regard. Thanks to procedural rules, Constable Santosh inherited her position in the police force from her late husband. Though inexperienced, she immediately takes on the case of the rape and murder of a girl from the “untouchable” Dalit caste. But in the world’s most populous country, not everyone follows the same rules. Only a chosen few can navigate the maze of corruption, questionable ethics, and caste discrimination in which violence and misogyny are always present.
