Imagina / Kada je zazvonio telefon / Serbia, USA 2024
When a young girl picks up the phone in 1992, everything changes – the disintegration of the country brings with it the collapse of personal assurances and subsequent traumas. And while we observe fragments of a child’s memories being pieced together, we are addressed by a pragmatic adult voice hoping to find equilibrium. This extremely fragile, yet also analytically reserved film avoids all retro sentiment, nevertheless, its analogue patina has immediate appeal. Iva Radivojević moves hypnotically between the familiar and the disturbingly unfamiliar, between the matter-of-fact and the poetic magic of dreams. How much can we believe our own recollections, how often do we go round in circles revisiting them? If the books written by Annie Ernaux were films, this is what they’d look like.
