Imagina / Bogancloch / United Kingdom, Germany, Ireland 2024
Jake Williams was the protagonist of the short film This Is My Land (2006) and also the feature-length Two Years at Sea (2011). Together with director Ben Rivers, we now return to the world of this hermit of mythical proportions, someone who might, in fact, be our neighbour. This measured and harmonious film mediates the extraordinary and, for the most part, silent experience of a man, whose inquisitive gaze nevertheless begins to show traces of weariness as the years pass. No matter how lyrically Rivers captures the magic of carefree slumber on a bed of moss, Bogancloch doesn’t offer cheap escapism. There is no need to have things in order for serenity to pervade your lives.
