Imagina / Archipelago of Earthen Bones – To Bunya / Canada, Australia 2024
Volcanic landscapes, rainforests and fascinating scenery from eastern Australia are transformed by Chilean filmmaker Malena Szlam into an imaginary landscape, shaped not only by the centuries that have passed, but also by the director’s work with 16mm film. Multiple exposures erase the disparities between night and day and enhance the magical qualities of the region and its flora. The mystique and instant magnetism of the piece derive not only from the director’s sense of detail and atmosphere, but also from the soundscapes created by Australian ambient magician Lawrence English.
