Synopsis

Producer Michael Douglas showed considerable courage when he entrusted the rights to a film adaptation of the stage play based on Ken Kesey’s novel to a director from Eastern Europe who was, at the time, virtually unknown in the USA. Miloš Forman repaid him for this decision by delivering a fairy-tale success of a film that took home all five major Academy Awards. The strength of the drama set in a psychiatric hospital also lies in the fact that the escalating psychological duel between a rebellious patient and the institution’s despotic head nurse is a variation on Forman’s key theme – the clash of the free-thinking individual with the power of the ruling establishment. Both lead actors performed their roles of a lifetime here, while the movie marked a crowning achievement in the filmmaker’s career.
