Out of the Past / Hsi Yen / Taiwan, USA 1993
A celebration of life and reconciliation and a colorful postcard from the early 1990s. Wai-Tung is an immigrant from Taiwan living happily in New York with his boyfriend. When he enters into a sham marriage with the temperamental painter Wei-Wei in order to get her a green card and placate his traditionally-minded parents, it would seem that they have found the perfect arrangement… until, that is, his parents arrive in New York. Lee’s groundbreaking queer romantic comedy was a winner in Berlin and launched its director’s illustrious career.
