Horizons / The Things You Kill / Turkey, France, Poland, Canada 2025
University professor Ali lives a comfortable life until the moment his mother dies. Was her death caused by Ali’s father and, by extension, Turkish society’s patriarchal culture? Ali’s mind dreams of cold-blooded vengeance, a desire that begins to take on real contours when he encounters a mysterious vagrant capable of doing any job. Alireza Khatami’s third feature film is one of the year’s best genre benders: what begins as a realistic moral drama turns into an existential, nightmarish thriller full of violence, layered metaphors, and the posthumous influence of Abbas Kiarostami or David Lynch.
