Horizons / Ariel / Spain, Portugal 2025
Galician director Lois Patiño has quite a career behind him. His most recent film, Samsara, redefined the possibilities of sensory experiences in cinema by inviting audiences on a journey between death and reincarnation in the form of a fifteen-minute meditation with closed eyes. Where Samsara explored Buddhist culture in Laos, Ariel presents a postmodern adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, set in the tropical volcanic landscape of the Azores, where Augustina finds herself in a strange reality full of Shakespearean characters incapable of breaking free from their predefined roles. The film is a seductively captivating walk through literary forests and a humorous metanarrative homage to the inhabitants of fictional worlds.
