Horizons / O último azul / Brazil, Mexico, Netherlands, Chile 2025
Departures from realism take many forms in Latin American cinema. Six years after the neon-lit dystopian near future of Divine Love, in which Brazil is dominated by conservative evangelical values, Gabriel Mascaro returns with yet another novel vision. In order for Brazil to develop economically, the country gives priority to its younger generations, while older people are put away in government colonies so they will not “get in the way.” The nearly 80-year-old Tereza, however, refuses to accept her fate and decides to escape. A socio-critical exploration of discrimination against the elderly and a Gulliverian odyssey across the Amazon, Blue Trail emanates its protagonist’s vivaciousness, charm, and untamed yearning for freedom.
