Synopsis

I saw the best minds of my generation… This verse could describe the ordinarily unordinary day of photographer Peter Hujar. Peter Hujar’s Day is a quiet, focused portrait, told through Hujar’s interview with journalist Linda Rosenkrantz. Their conversation brings to life New York in the 1970s, including the era’s community and the spirit of the times. Hujar’s description of one day is populated with figures such as Susan Sontag, William Burroughs, Glenn O’Brien, and Allen Ginsberg – people whom he knew, admired, and photographed. Director Ira Sachs’s masterpiece, which invites us into Rosenkrantz’s charming West Village apartment, is perhaps best followed up by a glass of wine, a Bob Dylan album, and a few lines from Howl.
