Are we watching a folk tale or listening to memories distorted by dreamlike logic, or did Jodorowsky perhaps decide to shoot some television propaganda? In his playful yet unsettling short film, Lin Htet Aung returns to his childhood, to the time he was exposed to the dictatorial regime’s brainwashing television broadcasts. These he now transforms into a fascinating, variegated form, in which politics encounters echoes of folkloric mires and, above all, lullabies that don’t help us get to sleep. A film that is fidgety and persistently absorbing in equal measure.
