Horizons / My Undesirable Friends: Part I – Last Air in Moscow / USA 2024
Five independent media outlets, seven journalists labeled “foreign agents” by Putin’s regime. In 2021, Soviet-born American filmmaker Julia Loktev documented the everyday reality of independent media in Russia with the aid of her friend Anna Nemzer, a host at Russia’s last independent television station, TV Rain. Screened in this year's Berlinale Special section, the film explores the lives of these bright, witty, and daring women, whose struggle for the truth becomes more complicated and dangerous following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The result is a unique and exceptionally powerful witness to Russia’s escalating totalitarianism bordering on fascism – but above all, it honors the regime’s often neglected opponents.
