Horizons / Michtav Le'David / Israel, USA 2024
In 2013, director Tom Shoval was present at the Berlinale with Youth, a drama about twin brothers whose strong bond is tested by the dramatic events of a kidnapping. By a twist of fate, one of the actors, David Cunio, was kidnapped by Hamas ten years later during the October 7 massacre and has been held captive ever since. Shoval’s documentary A Letter to David is half remembrances and half a message to David from his family, friends, and the director himself. Working with a large number of archival materials and heart-rending testimony about the events of that day, the film had its premiere this year as part of the Berlin film festival’s prestigious Berlinale Special section.
