Afterhours / Kadet / Kazakhstan 2024
Alina and her son Serik arrive at an elite military school – she as a history teacher, he as a cadet. But the boy has a hard time adapting to the school’s unwelcoming atmosphere and strict discipline, and immediately becomes the target of bullying. When a student is found dead at the school, a local investigator is called upon to unravel the mystery. Was it murder, suicide, or perhaps even the school’s ancient curse? And what role do Serik and motherly love play in it all? Adilkhan Yerzhanov, one of Kazakhstan’s most fertile contemporary filmmakers, returns to KVIFF with a chilling, well-crafted post-horror in which festering suppressed traumas from the regime of the past become even more cruel and vicious in the present.
