The Life and Times of John Garfield / Pride of the Marines / USA 1945
In this captivating drama based on the book telling the story of real-life marine Al Schmid, a simple Philadelphian labourer returns home a hero of the Guadalcanal campaign, where he is permanently blinded in battle. Before he decides to join the Marines, however, this somewhat arrogant charmer falls for the kindly Ruth (Eleanor Parker). Garfield’s fascinating range as an actor is exercised on both an intimate and epic level; he expresses himself in a myriad ways, conveying charm, sex appeal, humour, also bitterness and fear, self-pity and anger. Although lesser known, Pride of the Marines is considered one of America’s finest war dramas, from today’s perspective adopting a remarkably modern stance addressing Americans’ attitude to national minorities.
