The Life and Times of John Garfield / The Breaking Point / USA 1950
Six years after the adaptation of Hemingway’s novel To Have and Have Not, the film which brought iconic couple Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall together, Warner Bros. embarked upon a new version which was to stick more closely to the original book. The offer appealed to Garfield, although he wanted Michael Curtiz in the director’s chair, the man he owed for launching his career (Four Daughters). His boat captain Harry Morgan joins a variety of distinctive noir heroes, who find themselves in wretched situations, partly through adversity, partly through foolish attempts to engage in the underworld, blind to the irreversible consequences. Of all the movies Garfield appeared in, this was his favourite, a remarkable film in many respects; even so, the brilliant Curtiz directed another two films that same year…
