The Life and Times of John Garfield / Body and Soul / USA 1947
One of the most famous boxing dramas of all time, this film marked the beginning of a brief but important period in Garfield’s acting career. Thanks to celebrated movies such as Body and Soul, Force of Evil and The Breaking Point, he became an essential player of the film noir genre; yet this reputation would not have been so exclusive if Garfield had not created the key titles of his repertoire as independent productions. The gripping story of a boxer who, yearning for a life of luxury, gradually casts aside his ideals and succumbs to corruption, reflects the candid rejection of the capitalist system by the progressive left, championed not only by Garfield but, above all, by screenwriter Abraham Polonsky. His superb and highly evocative performance as the main character earned Garfield his second Oscar nomination.
