Synopsis

John Garfield was an outstanding actor in many respects; among others, he awakened in viewers a certain fondness even for protagonists who weren’t overly concerned with moral scruples. These include small-time thief Nick, Garfield’s final (anti)hero who, on the run from the law, hides out with a family he takes hostage. The haze of inevitability rising above his character is more palpable than before; Garfield’s prior heart attack and his unofficial blacklisting as a liberal supporting communist influences in Hollywood certainly added to the increasing hopelessness of Nick’s fate. The script for this worthy film noir, today seen as tangible proof of political pressure at the time of production, was co-written by Dalton Trumbo, then using several aliases as another artist who had fallen from grace.
