Horizons / FolleMente / Italy 2025
One summer evening in Rome, a table set for dinner, and anticipation. The latest outing by Paolo Genovese, a master of original and intelligent audience favourites, is reminiscent of his global hit Perfect Strangers (incidentally, the film with the most remakes in the history of cinema). This time around, he lets us sit in on a couple’s first date – though certainly not the first first date of either one. Who, however, are the four men and four women bickering about how Pietro and Lara should behave at their romantic dinner? The often contradictory thoughts of the evening’s two protagonists take on human form, and the act of pondering one’s next steps in a delicate situation has never been so much fun. The big audience hit of the year features the cream of Italy’s acting crop, both at the table and “in the head.”
