Tribute to Jiří Brožek / Smrt krásných srnců / Czechoslovakia 1986
Four names determined the successful adaptation of Ota Pavel’s short stories – director Karel Kachyňa, cameraman Vladimír Smutný, editor Jiří Brožek and actor Karel Heřmánek. Kachyňa cemented his reputation as a masterful narrator when, aided by resourceful editing, he organically combined motifs from different stories to craft a composition in which the shimmering, joyful mood, enhanced by poetic lensing, starts to dissipate beneath increasingly dramatic tones. The idyllic 1930s have now been replaced by the German occupation, and Heřmánek’s enchanting Jewish Electrolux salesman finds himself an outcast, who resolves to do something extremely dangerous for the sake of his sons.
