Horizons / La misteriosa mirada del flamenco / Chile, France, Germany, Spain, Belgium 2025
Eleven-year-old Lidia is growing up in a loving community of trans women in a mining town in northern Chile. It is 1982, and a mysterious and deadly illness is ravaging the area. Many are convinced that it is spread by the gaze of two men who fall in love with each other. Despite hostile rumors and attitudes, Lidia is not afraid to confront others, especially when the situation spirals out of control. Diego Céspedes’s directorial debut won the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes. A story about queer life at a time that was less open to otherness than today, it is a modern western about fighting prejudice, surviving in a hostile environment, and the complexity of love – which can be a refuge for one but a source of danger for another.
