Horizons / Urchin / United Kingdom 2025
Harris Dickinson, known for portraying the naive Carl in Ruben Östlund’s 2022 film Triangle of Sadness, returned to Cannes this year in a new role: as a debut director. His freshman film Urchin follows the young Mike as he repeatedly tries to escape the clutches of his drug addiction. This raw portrait of darkness and hope – which dims with each setback but is never extinguished – reflects Dickinson’s personal experience working as a volunteer at a community center. Frank Dillane fleshes out Mike as a fragile soul full of contradictions in a performance that earned him the Best Actor award in the Un Certain Regard competition.
