Endocrinologist Maurizio Bini, the central figure of the documentary The Good Doctor, is a department head at the Niguarda state hospital in Milan. His patients include couples who are having difficulty conceiving, and also people undergoing transition. Bini doesn't judge, but tries to give each individual complex care, thus treating not only their body but also their spirit. Although the film relates specifically to Italy, the issues it raises are absolutely universal, among them, the importance of a public healthcare system that provides care to all who need it. The camera never shows the protagonists from up front but always in profile, as if it was just another person attending the meeting with the doctor. This approach gives the film the kind of intimate feeling that its subject definitely deserves.
