“Telling a love story may be more difficult than living one,” says popular Italian actor Valerio Mastandrea in relation to his second directorial effort, whose main protagonist (played by the director himself) spends his days in the hospital without a worry in the world. He’s been hospitalized for quite a while, but he has no complaints. He is sheltered from the world, without any responsibilities. Some of the other patients are not as happy, but unlike them he doesn’t feel trapped – until, that is, a young temperamental woman is admitted to the same ward who refuses to accept the unwritten rules of this unusual situation. Mastandrea’s atypical, melancholy romance balances on the boundary between a life full of palpable beauty and the suffering that comes from a state from which there is no return.
