Out of the Past / Gloria / USA 1980
Karlovy Vary’s ongoing Cassavetes master class continues with this crime drama that put the king of independent cinema decades ahead of the trend towards strong female protagonists in film. His heroine, former mafia lover Gloria Swenson, is elegant, direct, and does not like children. This seemingly controversial attitude is shaken by circumstance, when she crosses paths with six-year-old Phil, who has been orphaned by a mafia hit. This character study possessing elements of neo-noir, for which the recently deceased Gena Rowlands received an Oscar nomination, is less challenging than Cassavetes’s other iconic films. Even so, his signature style characterized by a great emotional intensity achieved through the unconventional use of cinematic language is strongly felt here as well.
