Following the great success of The Worst Person in the World (2021), this year director Joachim Trier returned to Cannes with the no less ambitious, sensitive, humorous, and touching Sentimental Value. His leading actress Renate Reinsve is here joined by an ensemble cast of established names, including Stellan Skarsgård and Elle Fanning, in a story about a house full of one family’s memories, joys, and troubles. A bright cast of charismatic characters wanders the cold interiors and complex destinies fill the overgrown garden. The question as to whether it is possible to forget old grievances and build new relationships with others and oneself echoes from wall to wall. Trier’s lyrical audiovisual novel took home the Grand Prix from Cannes.
