The most terrifying sound at Cannes this year? The rubber squeaking of an artificial leg. It is the sound of the dreaded torturer in the prison to which Vahid was sent after a show trial. After his release, Vahid one day hears the sound again, and he decides to act: he impulsively knocks the man out and loads him into his van. But can he be sure that he has the right man if he’s never seen his face? Before long, the van fills with other former prisoners to help with the identification. Together, they face a question that haunts many nations: can we exact revenge against a cruel system by taking it out on one individual who loyally serves it? This moral thriller with elements of the darkly grotesque earned legendary Iranian dissident filmmaker Jafar Panahi the greatest award of the festival season: the Palme d’Or.
