Horizons / Kuang ye shi dai / China, France 2025
Every great artist has his own unmistakable signature style. China’s brilliant filmmaker Gan Bi works on the boundary between dream and reality, with cinephile specters from the depths of the subconscious that reimbue the cinematic medium with its forgotten transcendental charm. In his latest opus, he travels through the history of cinema, making five halts along the way: opium-drenched expressionism, a rainy film noir, an Oriental comedy, a metaphysical heist, and above all a hallucinogenic vampire karaoke at the turn of the millennium. Each chapter works with one of the senses, but they all reflect the gripping imagination of the sixth art, cinema, which gives physical form to the unseen – to something that needs to be experienced rather than understood.
