Out of the Past / Barry Lyndon / United Kingdom, USA 1975
Frequently criticized upon its release, Barry Lyndon is in hindsight a brilliant, timeless tale of an eighteenth-century rogue, soldier, deserter, womanizer, spy, and cheater at cards. Its title character’s vain search for fortune and fame, dotted with the occasional upswing and one giant downfall, stands out for its caustic irony and brilliant visuals that bring to mind the works of the old masters. A showpiece of Kubrick’s legendary perfectionism, shot in natural light on a specially produced camera using sensitive lenses from NASA, the film earned four Oscars and a reputation as a feared duelist in the battle for the best film of all time. The Karlovy Vary festival will be screening a brand new restored copy.
