Tribute to Peter Sarsgaard / Shattered Glass / USA, Canada 2003
The true story of journalist Stephen Glass, who in the second half of the 1990s made up numerous stories he wrote for The New Republic, remains uncomfortably relevant today. Perhaps, in fact, it is more relevant today than ever. Then as now, people’s tendency to mistrust the media reflects not just individual but also systemic weaknesses. While Hayden Christensen plays the naive, sensation-seeking Glass, the film’s emotional center is the excellent Peter Sarsgaard as the magazine’s editor-in-chief, who's gradually losing his patience. More than a drama about one man’s failure, Shattered Glass is a chilling snapshot of the time when the truth began to be defined by how well it reads.
