Synopsis

Renowned Hungarian director Ildikó Enyedi’s latest film has a surprising protagonist: a majestic ginkgo tree on a university campus in Germany that, its roots firmly planted in the ground, quietly observes its surroundings for more than a century. In 1908, it witnesses the arrival of the school’s first female student and the discoveries she makes, in 1972 it follows a student who develops an unexpected relationship with a geranium, and in 2020 a neuroscientist from Hong Kong begins a surprising experiment in the garden. The three eras and three stories are differentiated by the use of different styles, but taken together they are a masterfully directed and quietly political celebration of human curiosity that, with a smile on its face, reveals the insignificance of humanity in the face of nature’s magnificent mysteries.
