Horizons / Estrany riu / Spain, Germany 2025
Cinema has long been drawn to the subject of adolescence as an important period in life when our view of the world and of ourselves radically changes. Strange River nevertheless shows that there still is more to discover in the subgenre of the “coming-of-age” film. Jaume Claret Muxart’s feature debut takes audiences on a visually captivating, poetic journey along the Danube as it tells the tale of the emotional and sexual awakening of sixteen-year-old Dídac, including how his personal transformation affects the rest of the family. Mirroring the river, the film lets itself be carried along by an unpredictable stream as it gradually blurs the line between dream and reality in order to capture the fragility and uncertainty of youth.
