Imagina / Rose of Nevada / United Kingdom 2025
“I am someone else.” Director Mark Jenkin is a master of 16mm film – as demonstrated by the scene depicting a storm at sea – and he is also an all-round craftsman. His thus far most accessible mystery sci-fi piece follows two Cornwall fishermen (George MacKay and Callum Turner), who get themselves caught up in a weird time loop. This magical film, steeped in a subtly haunted atmosphere, is at once unsettling and engaging in the way it is focused on every gesture, action, movement and creaking of the deck. Its understated, intense and utterly consummate cinematography doesn’t adhere to concepts and just lets things take their course. A film, in which each shot is unobtrusive yet laden with possible meanings.
