Imagina / Levers / Canada 2025
In Manitoba there’s something in the air and no-one can capture it quite like Canadian filmmaker Rhayne Vermette, who shot her second feature film on a broken 16mm Bolex camera. In the Red River Valley people gather for the unveiling of a new sculpture and suddenly they are plunged into darkness. Reports on the television tell them that the sun will come to its senses and everything will be fine. This magical, taciturn and shimmeringly exquisite film unfolds in a mystical aura with a hint of sci-fi and is a testament to the power of analogue film. Mysteries are there to be experienced; we shouldn’t look for explanations. And the most wonderful procession is the one headed into the unknown – or into the night.
