Before Palestine, the Zionist Congress set its sights on the colonisation of the Ugandan highlands, where it sent an expedition in 1904 to explore their potential as a Jewish homeland. One hundred and twenty years on, the director scouts locations in the region for a possible period film. This authentic and, at the same time, deliberately artificial documentary functions admirably on numerous levels; here, the material blends with the poetic, the practical with the elusive. No man’s lands don’t exist; even the filmmaker could be a coloniser.
