Horizons / Dao / France, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau 2026
Alain Gomis’s monumental film inhabits an otherwise overlooked in-between space: during its three-hour runtime, it moves between France and Guinea-Bissau, a wedding and a memorial service, tradition and modernity, joy and sorrow, fiction and documentary. It is an innovative film shaped by the kinetic synergy between fluid camerawork and compelling editing. Gomis’s approach may circumvent narrative conventions, but this is what makes his film so engaging. It does not dictate, nor does it try to find a beginning, a middle, and an end. Instead, it captures and lets go again – the interactions between family members, togetherness and conflict, reality and transgression, a sense of home and a fragmented identity.
