The supermarket as a pillar of modern consumer society. Behind its sliding doors hides a microcosm filled with monotonous routine, unpleasant customers, and rigid rules – and it is all reflected in the emotionless face of young store assistant Sakai, which seems to have been drained of all life. The arrival of the ambitious part-time worker Ogawa, who dreams of opening her own hair salon, finally offers a ray of hope that he might break free from his constant apathy. But it’s not easy to escape from a toxic environment where empathy and individuality are suppressed in the name of standardized customer service. This unusually energetic social satire, winner of the FIPRESCI Award at this year’s Berlinale, is filled with absurd humor and sudden bursts of bloody violence.
