Horizons / Two Mountains Weighing Down My Chest / Germany, Netherlands 2026
Chinese artist and filmmaker Viv Li’s infectiously energetic, endearingly quirky, but also profoundly personal and exceptionally incisive self-portrait was one of the most pleasant surprises at this year’s Berlinale. Working with a DIY style, the director captures herself caught between Berlin’s pulsating alternative culture scene and the more conservative environment of contemporary China. Along the way, she reveals subtle culture clashes in a world that is globalized and polarized all at once. Shot in a playful yet sincere tone, her film explores the never-ending search for personal identity, home, and sense of belonging.
