Imagina / Tycoon / Canada, USA 2025
Los Angeles 2028: possibly the last punk-noir joyride through the city. Living on the edge of legality is the new norm; the protagonists here have to find their scratchcards in order to be able to afford them. This depressing yet defiantly energetic piece by Canadian filmmaker Charlotte Zhang feels both contemporary and drifting. We observe a tangible decline, captured with searing ordinariness; a deterioration the characters witness and in which they participate. This is carefully planned but also wonderfully intuitive filmmaking, following – in the future – the text of the song “This Bitter Earth” by Dinah Washington from 1960. Clichés about Third World countries are outdated, dystopia has long since become our reality.
