Grief is a strange drug. It gets under our skin, it survives in our heart chambers, it distorts reality. How does one deal with a sudden tragedy and with the questions that remain unanswered even a year later? A mother, a daughter and a teenage boy initially face their shared trauma alone, but they then travel together to faraway Tenerife, where they experience manifestations of guilt, the prospect of forgiveness, and also inscrutable visions of the past. Winner of this year’s Un Certain Regard at Cannes, the film is propelled by a softly mesmeric energy, authentic emotions and breathtaking moments, when the filmmaking craft becomes sacral magic. Everytime casts rays of light deep into the shadows of the human soul and emerges as the cinematic equivalent of a sun that never sets.
