Horizons / La Perra / Chile, Brazil 2026
This adaptation of the eponymous 2017 novel by Colombian author Pilar Quintana takes us to the island of Santa María off the coast of Chile, where forty-something Silvia earns a living harvesting seaweed. When Silvia adopts a stray puppy, an intense bond develops. In her third feature film, which premiered at the recent Cannes Film Festival, Dominga Sotomayor continues her exploration of nature and human nature, this time with the addition of an animal character. But the dog is more than a metaphor; it is an integral part of the film’s world with its own distinctive personality. To what extent can nature or an animal belong to us? And how much can we tame it?
