Horizons / Carmen, l’oiseau rebelle / France, Luxembourg 2026
Most people will be familiar with the opera Carmen, but can it be interpreted in an innovative manner that will also attract young audiences? Sébastien Laudenbach’s latest animated film tells us that the answer is yes. This adventure set on the side streets of sunny Seville tells the story of the orphan Salvador and his friend Belén, who, together with a gang of other street urchins, try to prevent a dark prophecy concerning the free-spirited beauty Carmen from coming true. This modern adaptation calling for women’s and community solidarity will captivate you with its opulent visual design characterized by the constant movement of broken lines, a rich palette of tropical colors, and an imaginative musical accompaniment in which original melodies blend with instrumental motifs evoking Bizet’s famous operatic score.
