Synopsis

What is it like to return to your native country but not to return home? It’s 1949. Thomas Mann, accompanied by his daughter Erika, arrives in Germany after an absence of sixteen long years in order to receive two awards, one in American-occupied Frankfurt, the other in Weimar, controlled by the Soviets. In the course of their journey, the pair receive news of a family tragedy. Disarming in its directorial style, this subtly layered piece can be interpreted in various ways: as a thought-provoking probe into post-war society, an intimate family drama, a road movie meandering between myth and reality, and as a surprisingly topical film about the role of the intellectual in a time of change. The leads are superbly played by Hanns Zischler and Sandra Hüller, with exquisite lensing from cinematographer Łukasz Żal.
