Svilengrad, southeastern Bulgaria. Veska has recently returned to her hometown in order to oversee a nearby archeological dig. By coincidence, she runs into Saïd, an old acquaintance whose car has been stolen. When Veska offers to drive him to a meeting, she is caught up in a smuggling operation and sets out on a dangerous adventure that forces her to confront her past and her own desires. Director Valeska Grisebach continues her exploration of a genre ordinarily dominated by men. Her muted gangster movie, winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes, relies on an exceptionally captivating protagonist but also works as a study of Bulgaria’s diverse border region.
