In a Nepalese village in the middle of a forest inhabited by wild elephants lives Pirati, a leading figure and healer in the Kinnar community, which provides refuge for third-gender people rejected by their families. She plans to leave her adopted family and to live with the man she loves, but when one of her daughters disappears, she must take the investigation into her own hands and choose between her own freedom and her sense of responsibility for others. An emotional, action-packed film that mixes social criticism with a sense of mystery, Elephants in the Fog explores the ambivalent position of a community that is both feared and marginalized. Thanks to a stunning performance by its lead actress, the film was awarded the Jury Prize in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes.
