Synopsis

New York in the late 1980s. Actor Jimmy George (Rami Malek) is recuperating from serious health complications, but he is determined to return to the stage for what may be one of his final roles. Thanks to the play’s rehearsals and a new romance, he finds meaning in life, but his friends remain on alert. Ira Sachs’s ninth feature film, part intimate relationship drama and part melancholy look back at New York’s queer community, captures that community’s distinctive energy and fragility during the AIDS epidemic. Instead of presenting awareness of one’s mortality in a sentimental manner, however, it shows it as a celebration of life, love, and art.
