Rwanda, 2012. Nearly twenty years after the genocide of the country’s Tutsi population, community tribunals are still being organized with the goal of healing social divisions and fostering reconciliation. Vénéranda, a survivor of the genocide, moderates a dialogue between victims and the families of perpetrators. But when she learns that her daughter is pregnant, she must face the shadows of her own past. The first Rwandan film to be screened at Cannes lays bare a country that seems to be healing on the surface but continues to bleed within. How difficult is forgiveness? How to find justice and inner peace? This social but also intimate intergenerational drama is defined by extraordinarily strong female characters who rightly sense that sorrow and hope sometimes follow the same path.
