Horizons / La vie d’une femme / France, Belgium 2026
Fiftysomething Gabrielle is a respected surgeon and head of a hospital department. Having dedicated her life to her career, she has little time for her marriage or for a mother suffering from dementia. When a young novelist turns up at the hospital seeking inspiration for a new book, the carefully constructed equilibrium of Gabrielle’s world gradually begins to shift. Director Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet considered the film after the death of her mother, who lost her battle with cancer in 2017. Instead of a story of illness, however, she decided to focus on a woman of similar age, who appears invincible and capable of carrying the weight of responsibility on her shoulders. This sober portrait of Gabrielle thus examines the borderline between professional success, caring for others and the need for closeness.
