Synopsis

In his latest film Pedro Almodóvar blends a personal drama with a metafictional reflection on the creative process. Following two plot lines, he tells the story of Raúl, a respected screenwriter and film director, and Elsa, an ad director and the heroine of his new script. The latter immerses herself in work as a coping mechanism after the death of her mother. While Elsa faces mental exhaustion and reassesses her life, Raúl, seeking inspiration, increasingly exploits the lives of the people closest to him. Via his distinctive approach, Almodóvar explores the ethical limits of artistic expression and asks whether self-fulfilment through art is also a process that ultimately destroys human relationships.
